WHY I BELIEVE IN ONLINE THERAPY
Confession: At first I was a little skeptical of the effectiveness of online therapy.
When I first heard of online therapy, I had been providing wellness services in traditional, face-to-face settings for years. I assumed the connection I was able to create in-person with clients and families could not be replaced by a screen or telephone. However, in these same traditional settings, I also witnessed how clients had difficulty making and keeping appointments, felt stigma in a therapy office, and found long-term therapy financially unsustainable. Once I began providing online therapy, I experienced a transformation in my professional judgment rather quickly. The incredible clients I work with entirely online have taught me the value and opportunity in online therapy in so many ways.
Why I now believe in online therapy:
Convenient: I love the chance to provide professional therapy based on my clients' lives and schedules. Once clients find therapy to be convenient, their motivation and retention strengthens.
Accessible: Booking therapy appointments in an office somewhere is not accessible to all. Some of my clients travel a lot, some have busy work and family lives, and others have limited transportation. And let's face it; when you're experiencing depression or anxiety, adding one more responsibility such as traveling across town to some office can seem overwhelming. It is a joy for me to get to eliminate these barriers to access.
Immediate: With my unlimited messaging plans, my clients get support on a daily basis. For my remote therapy plans, I intentionally keep my caseload small enough so that I can fit in a phone or video session within the very same week you sign up. No more waiting weeks or even months for in-person therapy appointments. Clients message me in-the-moment when they are experiencing both highs and lows. Often a client will message me during a particularly rough day and later tell me just being able to write about it in the moment helped. This inspires me to continue providing a space that is open to clients 24/7.
Affordable: Therapy does not have to be expensive! Another reason I am passionate about online therapy is because of its affordability. I am dedicated to providing my clients with professional therapy that costs much less than in-person, face-to-face therapy. Clients have told me they would have never been able to engage in therapy long enough for true change if they were in the expensive offices they had tried unsuccessfully in the past.
Anonymous: Many of my clients have said they find it easier to open up using the online setting versus face-to-face. Some clients also like not having to go to an office or waiting room due to the stigma around mental health; there is no longer the worry that they will run into someone they know. Receiving professional therapy in the privacy of your own home can provide the anonymity you need to feel comfortable. It has been so touching to experience clients openly sharing their stories with me in this more private setting.
Evidence-based: It is my ethical and professional responsibility to provide clients with evidence-based treatment. Online therapy has been proven as an effective treatment with more and more research developing.
A movement: Online therapy is growing! I am honored to be a part of this movement of millions of people worldwide. As more and more people are experiencing the benefits of online therapy due to its convenience and flexibility, stigma around mental health is decreasing and professional help is reaching more people in need.
ONLINE THERAPY FAQ
How Does Online Therapy Work?
Via Messaging: I use a private, HIPAA-compliant platform to message back and forth ("asynchronous chat") with clients. Clients can message me at anytime, 24/7. I reply with professional reflection, guidance, and/or homework exercises once or twice a day, depending on your plan, five days a week. You can access your private messaging account using a smartphone, computer, or iPad/tablet.
Via Phone Call: For those who prefer phone calls over messaging or video, I provide therapy and wellness services over the phone. You can easily schedule these sessions online to fit your lifestyle. You can combine phone calls with your messaging plan and/or in addition to video sessions.
Via Live Video: I use a private, HIPAA-compliant live video platform (similar to FaceTime) to engage in therapy sessions weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly. You can access your live video session using your smartphone, computer, or iPad/tablet. You can easily schedule these sessions online to fit your lifestyle. You can add video sessions to your messaging plan and/or in addition to phone sessions.
